Equine Program

Fresno State Quarter Horse Unit Newsletter

Volume 2, Number 1, FEBRUARY 2007

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We’ve had a busy fall semester and look forward to a busier spring.  Enrollment is high, the horses are healthy and there is lots of activity at the Quarter Horse Unit (QHU) and the Equestrian Team as well.  Spring promises to be busy, with foals on the way, breeding season, large classes and a full schedule of open houses and educational seminars.  Classes are open to the public through the university’s Open University program.  This spring semester, we are offering Advanced Horse Management (mostly equine reproduction) and Advanced Colt Training (ground work and beginning riding training for 2 year old colts).   Dates for the open houses and educational seminars are shown on page 3.

We’re trying something new in our breeding program this year.  We call it our Young Sires program.  Info about is on page 2.  Through donations of breedings or horses, we’ve been able to acquire some top quality genetics in our young stallions.  Without the finances to go to shows or for extensive advertising, our Quarter Horse Unit is at a bit of a disadvantage to promote these young, well-bred stallions.  So, in an effort to create a win-win situation for both us and mare owners, we’ve decided to offer breedings to these young stallions in a breeding-mare care package at a very reasonable rate.  Please contact us if you’d like more information about this new program.

We hope you can participate in some of our programs, or just come see us.  We’ve always got a nice group of young horses for sale.  We like to meet the people in the community and learn how we can work together in our mutual horse activities.  Looking forward to seeing you this spring.

In Memoriam:  Pavo de peppy

An era came to an end last December with the passing of Quarter Horse stallion, Pavo De Peppy.  He leaves behind a legacy of daughters, now broodmares at the QHU, and a legion of students, faculty and alumni who remember him with respect and affection.

Pavo was born at the King Ranch in Texas in  1977.  Shown very successfully as a 3 and 4 year old in cutting, Pavo came to California and started his career as a breeding stallion at Fresno State in 1983.  He remained at the QHU until his passing in December at the age of 29.  Pavo sired more than 20 foal crops born at the QHU as well as many foals for others.  His foals were stamped with their father’s look, athletic ability, good disposition and keen mind.

Pavo was a horseman’s horse: a talented show horse, a prepotent sire, a courageous and high energy individual.  Honest and kind always, he has left a void in our program and in our hearts.

New for 2007:  young sires program

Three young Quarter Horse stallions are being offered for public service at the QHU in a new program called our Young Sires program.  In an effort to make available to the public top quality Quarter Horse bloodlines at affordable prices, we are offering a breeding package of a breeding to any of these young stallions plus 30 days of mare care, all for a single price of $950.

If you prefer, breeding services can be sold individually:
Breeding fee: $750              Shipped Semen:  $200             Mare Care:  $9/day

Cry Me A Cat, a son of Catalano (by Hy Brow Cat) and out of a Doc O Lena mare; Fresnos Mr. Pep, by Mr. Dual Pep and out of Fresnos Barfleurnic (Reminic); and Hickory’s Hot Cocoa, an own son of Doc’s Hickory and out of a Handle Bar Doc mare are young, good-minded, sound, and un-shown young stallions that were raised in or donated to our equine program. They are being ridden by students and we will showcase them at our two open houses (see Upcoming Events for dates).

We recognize that with no show record, these young stallions are not for everyone.  But for mare owners who wants access to “champagne” quality genetics at “beer” prices, these stallions might be worth investigating

Community Support:  DR. IRENE HARRIS

Dr. Irene Harris has been a great supporter of both our QHU and Equestrian Team programs.  She has helped secure breedings to some fantastic stallions for our breeding program.  She and her husband, Larry, have hosted our Stable Management class for field trips to their fabulous ranch, and she has helped our students improve their riding and training skills.

Always encouraging in her approach, everyone looks forward to learning from Irene.  She has great technical skill, knows wonderful riding exercises and offers insight into the mental aspects of riding—for both the horse and the rider. Learn more about Irene, her ranch and her sports psychology expertise at lagunaislandranch.com.

Generous with her time and expertise, a multi-talented horse women, and a great friend—we really appreciate Irene.
