Fresno State Quarter Horse Unit Newsletter Volume 1, Number 1, April 2006 Brief History: Fresno State Quarter Horse Unit (QHU) has been in existence for more than 50 years. At the present location since the 1950’s, the QHU maintains a herd of 100 Quarter Horses and Hackney Horses for educational experience for our students, for applied research projects and for community service events like judging contests, field days, educational seminars and open houses. Presently six equine courses and several animal science courses utilize the QHU for labs and internships, covering such areas as Horse Production, Advanced Horse Management, Stable Management, Equine Nutrition and Colt Training. The classes cover breeding and selection, nutritional investigations, health and disease control, general horse handling techniques, breaking horses to halter and saddle and internship work experience. As a learning facility, the Fresno State Quarter Horse Unit is unparalleled. Many students graduate to full-time employment in the horse industry. The QHU operates as a functional breeding and training enterprise. We currently stand four stallions which breed to Fresno State’s mares and outside mares. The young horses we raise are for sale. Well bred Quarter Horse and Hackney Horse yearlings, 2 year-olds, 3 year-olds and brood mares are for sale at all times. We welcome the public at anytime by appointment, to come view our facilities and horses and learn more about our programs.
